Chris Cooper stars in this crime drama written and directed by John Sayles. In a corrupt border town fraught with racial tension, Sam Deeds (Cooper) is the sheriff, largely because he is the son of legendary former sheriff Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey). When a skeleton is discovered on a shooting range, along with a sheriff's badge and a Masonic ring, the remains are identified as Charley Wade (Kris Kristofferson), another former sheriff, a cruel and racist man whom Buddy allegedly ran out of town. As Sam begins digging into the past, he encounters resistance from those who would prefer certain secrets remain buried. The cast also includes Elizabeth Peña, Miriam Colon, Joe Morton and Frances McDormand.
