Bette Davis and Glenn Ford star in this American comedy directed by Frank Capra. Apple Annie (Bette Davis), a Broadway fruit seller, has hit a spot of bad luck: her daughter, Louise, (Ann-Margret), who has been educated abroad and believes Annie to be a wealthy member of New York high society, is coming to visit. In order to keep up appearances Annie enlists the help of local gangster Dave the Dude (Ford) who recruits a band of eccentric 42nd Street characters, hoping to pass them off as the cream of New York society. But will Louise be fooled by Dave and Annie's madcap plan?
