In the town of Silver Lode, beloved citizen Dan Ballard (Payne) is mere moments from being married to Rose Evans (Scott) when U.S. Marshal Ned McCarty (Duryea) arrives at the ceremony with a warrant for his arrest. Ballard is personally accused of murder and the theft of $20,000 but has serious doubts as to whether McCarty is truly a U.S. Marshal at all. Before long, McCarty has sowed seeds of doubt all over Silver Lode and Ballard finds himself a pariah in the town he called home.
