Police psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Collins (Cobb) relates the story of how he came to leave his job as a professor and start working with the police. While Collins and his wife are entertaining a group of family and friends, escaped murderer Al Walker (Holden), his girlfriend, Betty (Foch), and their gang break in to their holiday cabin and take everyone hostage. Believing in the power of his work, Collins begins to analyse Walker, who seems receptive. When the police arrive and surround the cabin, how will Walker react?
