Viggo Mortensen writes, directs and stars in this Western set in 1860s San Francisco. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), an independent French-Canadian woman, has a fateful encounter with Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) in the American West. The two soon fall in love and begin to build a life together, but everything changes when the emergence of the Civil War calls Holger to enlist in the Union Army, despite Vivienne's objections. Forced to get by on her own, things take a sinister turn when the local landowner's sadistic son, Weston Jeffries (Solly McLeod), brutally assaults her. When Holger finally returns, will things ever be the same?
