The story follows the decision by journalist and TV news producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) and long-standing newscaster Dan Rather (Robert Redford) of CBS News to air a pre-election segment detailing how President George W. Bush managed to evade conscription during the Vietnam War, an episode in the programme's history now referred to as the 'Killian documents controversy'. When it is alleged that the memos used as evidence for the story were faked, a brutal investigation begins that implicates all members of the production team including Mike Smith (Topher Grace), Lucy Scott (Elisabeth Moss) and Lt.
