When Billy Tully (Keach), a boxer past his prime, visits a gym in an attempt to get back in shape he encounters a young man named Ernie Munger (Bridges). After sparring with him and seeing his potential, Tully tells him he ought to try and find an old trainer of his. Inspired by the encounter, Tully wants to start boxing again. But as the young Munger struggles to make his way in the boxing world, Tully finds himself down on his luck with little chance of returning to his glory days.
