1950s American musical drama starring Doris Day and James Cagney. In 1920s Chicago, nightclub singer Ruth Etting (Day) pursues her dream of stardom with the help of gangster Martin Snyder (Cagney). Despite declining his romantic advances, he uses his connections and old-fashioned intimidation to land Ruth a number of lucrative opportunities. As her star begins to rise in the entertainment business, Martin grows fearful of losing her to agent Johnny Alderman (Cameron Mitchell) while his increasingly volatile and violent behaviour threatens to derail her hard-earned success.
