Description

Paul Leni directs this film adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. Set in 17th century England, Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) performs in a travelling circus and is the star attraction as a result of a childhood punishment that has resulted in him having a fixed and grotesque smile. Ashamed of this disfigurement Gwynplaine only ever shows his smile when on stage. When it transpires that Gwynplaine is descended from royalty he is offered an opportunity to marry Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova). However. agreeing to the marriage will mean turning his back on the circus as well as ending his relationship with Dea (Mary Philbin), the only person that Gwynplaine feels is capable of truly loving him.
