Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen star in this drama directed by Stephen Frears. In 1997, Tony Blair's Labour Government has just won an election, ending 18 years of Conservative rule. Blair (Sheen) must introduce himself to the Queen (Mirren) and ask permission to govern the country. Shortly thereafter, the former Princess of Wales is killed in Paris. The Queen's initial reaction is to close ranks and treat Diana as an outsider, being that she had left the royal household. However, Blair senses the coming landslide of public opinion against this course of action and tries to change her mind.
