The complete opera of the classic 1980 production by Elijah Moshinsky of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, filmed live from the Metropolitan Opera. Features an all-star cast, led by Luciano Pavarotti at the height of his fame in one of his most celebrated roles. Joined by Katia Ricciarelli (Amelia), Judith Blegen (Oscar), Bianca Berini (Ulrica) and Louis Quilico (Renato). Conducted by Giuseppe Patane. Governor Riccardo is in love with his secretary Renato's wife Amelia. He visits a fortune teller who informs him that he is to be assassinated by the next person to shake his hand; this turns out to be Renato. Riccardo encounters Amelia and confesses his love to her; she responds in kind, but they are disturbed by Renato. When Renato discovers the situation, he vows to kill Riccardo, and joins the men plotting against him.
