Description

Russian drama set in a psychiatric ward, adapted from a short story by Anton Chekhov. Vladimir Ilin stars as Dr Ragin, a psychiatric doctor in a suburban hospital who becomes increasingly drawn into deep philosophical discussions with the patients on his ward, particularly Gromov (Aleksey Vertkov), a highly intelligent yet extremely disturbed patient suffering from paranoid delusions. Over time Ragin begins to disengage with reality and neglect his medical duties, begging the question of where the line should be drawn between introspection and insanity. The film transposes the original 19th century setting of Chekhov's story to present-day Moscow, and weaves documentary footage of conversations with real patients into the dramatic narrative.
